Preventing Child Abuse in the Digital Age

The digital revolution has transformed childhood in Kerala. With over 80% internet penetration among youth, children today navigate a complex online landscape filled with both opportunities and risks.

Online child sexual exploitation is a growing concern nationwide. Per the National Crime Records Bureau, cyber crimes against children have seen a significant rise in recent years. Kerala, with its high digital literacy, is not immune.

The Kerala Child Welfare Society has launched a comprehensive digital safety program that includes:

1. School-based awareness sessions on safe internet practices 2. Parent workshops on monitoring children's online activities 3. Training for teachers to identify signs of online grooming 4. A dedicated reporting mechanism for online child abuse

We recommend the 4S approach for parents: Set boundaries, Supervise activity, Start conversations, and Stay informed. Open communication with children about their online experiences is the most effective safeguard.

If you suspect a child is being exploited online, report immediately to Child Helpline 1098 or the Cyber Crime Portal. Early intervention can prevent lifelong trauma.
