Understanding Child Rights: A Guide for Parents in Kerala

Child rights are not just legal provisions but moral imperatives that every society must uphold. In Kerala, the Kerala Child Welfare Society has been at the forefront of ensuring that every child's right to survival, development, protection, and participation is respected.

The Right to Survival includes the right to life, adequate nutrition, and healthcare. Kerala's impressive infant mortality rate of 6 per 1,000 live births reflects significant progress, but challenges remain in tribal and coastal communities.

The Right to Development encompasses education, play, and cultural activities. Despite Kerala's near-universal literacy, dropout rates in higher secondary education remain a concern, particularly among economically disadvantaged groups.

The Right to Protection shields children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination. Our Child Helpline 1098 receives over 25,000 calls annually, highlighting both awareness and the ongoing need for protective services.

The Right to Participation allows children to express their views on matters affecting them. Through our Balasabha initiatives, we encourage children to engage in democratic decision-making processes.

As parents and community members, understanding these rights is the first step toward creating a safe and nurturing environment for every child in Kerala.
